November 24 -- Truckin' in Sacramento!

It took more than five hours to get from Ashland to Sacramento. Despite the length of the journey, the scenery was beautiful: initially mountainous, with a particularly spectacular hour or so on the road that winds around Mount Shasta; then broad plains in the long valley north of Sacramento.

The Hayes Truck Museum is a part of the Heidrick Ag History Center, which includes an extensive collection of farm implements, tractors and harvesting machinery. The facility is in a large transshipping center that was desolated on a Saturday afternoon, and I was virtually alone in the museum.

The collection is extensive, and being largely ignorant of trucks I felt out of my depth. Nonetheless, it’s a big collection, and I enjoyed seeing it. Here are some of the highlights:

Completely unrestored Ford Model T truck that still runs perfectly.

When I hear Packard I always think of cars. This 1916 truck was just as nice as many of the company’s handsome automobiles.

A maker, Jumbo, I’d never heard of before. But what a great insignia!

Beautiful blue 1930 Chevrolet Model AD roadster pickup. One of my favorites.

1926 REO truck that 1980’s music fans are familiar with, whether they know it or not!

1949 Nash Wrecker.

Early Macks and the famous Bulldog!

Incredible. A Pierce Arrow tanker truck! Glance at it quickly, and it looks almost exactly like some trucks on the road today.

Same with this 61 year-old Kenworth. It looks like a 2006; not a ’46.
