December 10 - 12 -- Warren & Micheline in Charlotte

I arrived at Warren & Micheline’s house in Charlotte, NC right before dinner. I still kick myself for not taking a picture of the meal that Micheline prepared. The main dish was red and yellow baked peppers with a spicy meat stuffing, dressed in a fresh marinara sauce and served on rice prepared in an old-fashioned stove top pressure cooker. A beautiful salad accompanied the peppers 'n rice, and then home made apple & berry tart with ice cream afterwards. Best of all, we had the sort of light-hearted, spirited and raucous conversation that I have become accustomed to in almost 30 years of friendship, and didn’t call it quits until almost midnight.

Warren and Micbeline taught me French and Classics in high school, and we have been friends ever since. I usually get to visit them a couple of times a year, either in Charlotte or in Aix-en-Provence, where they have an apartment. In addition, I’ve done some great traveling in Africa with Micheline.

These are pics of Micheline’s bead collection. My favorite strand is the result of hours of discussion under a tent on the roof of a building in St. Louis, Senegal with a European expat. He was not only a tough and wily advocate, but his epicurian exoticism and Oscar Wilde appearance have become my definition of “louche."

Tuesday, I slept in, enjoyed Warren and Micheline’s company, relaxed and did a little catching up. We had two fabulous meals and tea with, at various times, their friends Bill, Judith, John, Pat, and Anne. When Warren and Micheline moved from Massachusetts to North Carolina, I worried about how they'd fit into a community in an entirely new part of the country. I shouldn’t have been concerned: it's been a blast getting to know this dynamic, engaged, group on my visits to Charlotte.
Dinner was tender pork roast, baby potatoes, and wax beans followed by salad. For dessert, we had prunes marinated in red wine and other things. I need to get the recipe: the prunes not only tasted delicious, but also had an amazing fragrance -- intoxicating almost like orange blossoms.

My Mini getting to know the White Flash. It was in this Volvo, in November 1984, that Warren drove me to vote for the very first time.
