November 30 -- Dinner with Tom and Andrew

I drove directly from Planes of Fame to West Hollywood, where my old friends Tom & Andrew live. I shared a house my third year of law school with Tom, and at that time got to know Andrew, his partner. That’s them, below, with their dog Soba.

When I arrived at Tom and Andrew’s bungalow, I had a chance to meet with Andrew’s mom, who is staying with them for a couple of months to get in shape for lung surgery. It is fun to meet someone’s parent after you’ve known a person for 15 years. Andrew’s mom was very nice, and it was a kick to see how alike in appearance and mannerisms mother and son were at times.

The Mini made a friend on a stop-off on the way to West Hollywood.

Tom and Andrew then took me out to a great restaurant called Cube. It seemed very LA to me: a premium on fresh, delicious ingredients; a waiter willing to talk about the food in real detail; artisanal, high-end cuisine, yet a relaxed atmosphere. As much as I hate to admit it, this may give the Best Restaurant in Los Angeles (yes, the one next to LAX) a run for its money.

Hollywood!

As always, we had a very fun meal together catching up – not so much reminiscing about old times as bringing each other up to speed on what’s going on now. The meal itself was delectable: we started with a flight of French cheeses. I then had a superb cream of tomato soup, followed by lasagna filled with squash, Italian sausage, and a pecorino-like cheese, finished with a cream sauce. Tom and Andrew brought a bottle of Turley zinfandel. They receive a small quantity of this delicious California wine directly from the producer every year. You can’t buy it in the stores, and they had to sit on a wait list for some time in order to get in on the action.

After dinner, we went back to the bungalow and for dessert had some of the cookies that Tom makes every week, by popular demand, for the LA Zen Center. He also had made some tasty little chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting. Yum!
